I Can’t Wait to be a Mum

I really can’t.

I can’t wait for the first smiles and gurgles from this person who will love me without question. I’m so looking forward to their first toddling steps and watching them discover all the sights, sounds and smells of the world around them. I cannot wait to teach them about colours and shapes and farm animals. To read books with them and sing silly songs while we dance around the house like crazy people.

I can’t wait to play with all the little toys and games. I’m so excited about having a willing opponent for Snakes and Ladders and the perfect excuse to browse in toy shops and even buy stuff without having to pretend it’s for an imaginary nephew (we have a genuine niece!). I’m looking forward to building Lego models and racing toy cars (whatever the baby’s gender!) and to chasing them around the park, pushing them on the swings and holding their hand for that first slippery ride down a slide.

I can’t wait to make a mess with my little one. To introduce them to cooking and baking and covering the kitchen with flour and sugar before licking the bowl clean. I want to try finger painting and recording our hand and foot prints together. I’m looking forward to playing in the mud, and that first trip to the seaside when sand will get everywhere!

I can’t wait to be a “proper family” that can legitimately go to “family” events. I’m looking forward to be being able to go to LegoLand without being the only people there without a small person in tow. I’m so excited about their first pantomime and taking them to all the Disney releases at the cinema.

Most of all I can’t wait to watch them grow in to a person and develop their own little personality and quirks. I can’t wait for the look of wonderment on their face every time they discover something new and something that I’m probably guilty of taking for granted. I’m excited to see the world through their eyes.

I know it’s going to be hard work and probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. But I’m so looking forward to it. It feels like the thing that’s been missing until now.
